What is a computer?
A computer is a general purpose machine which can receive data, store and process it and output information.
OR
A computer refers to an electronic machine which accepts data input, process it under instruction, stores, and outputs information.
Main Parts of a computer.
Monitor: Its used to display information in form of soft copy.
Keyboard: it is an input device used to enter text into the computer system by pressing buttons, or keys. It is the primary device used to enter text.
Mouse: it is used to control the movement of pointer on a screen
System Unit: it is used to house all internal components of a computer.
Speakers: it is used produce out sound from a computer.
CHARACTERISTICS OF MODERN COMPUTER
- Speed: Computers are very fast in their operations. Their speed is measured in MIPs [ Million instructions per second]
- Accuracy: Computers hardly make mistakes. Mistakes committed by computers are mainly caused by the user. Hence the saying garbage in garbage out (GIGO).
- Storage: Computers keep user data / information for future use.
- Diligence: Computers work on the same task over and over without getting bored or tired
- Artificial intelligence: computers accept instructions and respond accordingly like humans.
- Automation: Computers have the ability of working without human supervision.
- Versatility: Computers have the ability of doing different or multiple tasks.
- Communication: Networked computers have the ability to send and receive messages.
WHAT IS A COMPUTER SYSTEM?
A computer system is a collection of computer components , working together to input data (Raw Facts), store and output information.
COMPONENTS OF A COMPUTER SYSTEM
Components of a computer system include Hardware, Software, People (Computer User), Procedures and information
- HARDWARE: This refers to all tangible / physical components of a computer. eg Monitor , keyboard, speaker.
- SOFTWARE: This refers to set of instructions or programs which enables a computer to perform a specific task.
- PEOPLE: These are computer users for example, Students, Accountants, Bank tellers , etc
- PROCEDURES : This refers to the steps or actions taken in order to accomplish a specific task.
- INFORMATION: This refers to the processed data which is useful or has value to the end user.
