What Is the New Lower Secondary Curriculum?
The Ministry of Education and Sports, through the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC), rolled out the new lower secondary curriculum in 2020. It is competence-based: instead of memorising content, learners build skills and apply knowledge to real-life situations. The first candidates sat UCE under the new curriculum in 2024.
Key features of the new curriculum include:
- Fewer subjects, with compulsory and elective subjects in S1 to S4.
- Learner-centred teaching, with group work, projects and practical activities.
- Activities of integration, where learners combine what they have learnt to solve a real problem.
- Continuous assessment: school-based assessment contributes 20% of the final UCE result and the UNEB examination contributes 80%.
- Scenario-based exam items marked with scoring guides.

Tips for Learners Under the New Curriculum
- Take part in every activity. Classwork, projects and activities of integration count toward your final UCE result.
- Keep your work organised. Store projects and assessed work safely, as they form part of your continuous assessment record.
- Connect topics to real life. Ask yourself how each topic is used at home, in business or in your community.
- Practise scenario questions. Use sample papers to get used to reading a scenario and answering what it asks.
Tips for Parents
- Encourage your child to complete projects and activities on time.
- Ask what problem a project is solving and let your child explain it to you.
- Support practical work at home, such as simple experiments, budgeting or community research.
