Planning and Assessment Under the New Curriculum
Uganda’s new lower secondary curriculum is competence-based, and school-based assessment counts for 20% of a learner’s final UCE result. These practices help teachers plan and assess well:
- Plan from learning outcomes. Break each topic in the syllabus into learning outcomes and plan activities that let learners show each one.
- Use learner-centred activities. Group work, projects, experiments and presentations build the competences the curriculum targets.
- Assess continuously. Record evidence from classwork, projects and activities of integration throughout the term, not only from end of term exams.
- Write scenario-based items. Base questions on real situations learners recognise, like those in UNEB sample papers.
- Prepare scoring guides. Describe what evidence earns each score so marking is fair and consistent across teachers.
- Moderate with colleagues. Review each other’s items and marking within your department.
